Nonhaugen North (999 m) – The Hidden Backcountry Classic Between Evanger and Eksingedalen

Nonhaugen North (999 m) is one of those quiet West Norway ski tours that feels “big” without being complicated: a steady climb from the mountain pass, open highland terrain, and a wide, wintery panorama when you hit the ridge.

• Getting there

   Approx. 1 hour 40 minutes (102 km) by car from Bergen. 

• Parking

   Free parking is available in a roadside parking lay-by. 

• Description

  The tour typically starts at Vinningsleitet (around 727 m), the high point on the road crossing between Evanger and Nesheim in Eksingedalen. Parking is usually straightforward right by the road—just be ready for snowbanks after fresh storms.

  From the trailhead, work your way into the rolling mountain landscape and aim for the broad ridge system leading toward Nonhaugen North. This is classic “choose-your-line” backcountry: the route can be adjusted to wind, visibility, and snow stability. In cold, dry conditions the upper sections can feel alpine, while milder days often bring heavier snow lower down.

  On a clear day, the summit area delivers a surprisingly expansive view—deep into the valleys around Evanger/Eksingedalen and across the surrounding peak clusters. If you want a longer day, the ridge terrain makes it easy to link several summits in one outing—especially the cairn on Blåfjellet, which is a perfect extra objective farther west along the same ridge.
